a piece of cake

和它类似的说法还有a piece of pie, as easy as pie。

the apple of one's eye

Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of the wings"(求你保护我,如同保护眼中的瞳孔。)

He's sure full of beans these days. He works a lot harder in the office.

in a nutshell 简而言之

To put it in a nutshell, we're bankrupt

a policy of (the) stick and (the) carrot

(as) cool as a cucumber

It's not everybody who can keep as cool as a cucumber in an emergency.

be garlic for dessert

That's the garlic for dessert.

know one's onions

英语学习专家提醒:英语学习重在运用,要动起来, be active in your study!

        1. You have matches

        2. Turn the table

再说远一点, turn the tables (on someone)这个短语也和“桌子”没什么关系, 它的意思是to suddenly take a position of strength or advantage that was formerly held by someone else (反败为胜,转弱为强)。例如: “She played badly in the first set, but then she turned the tables on her opponent and won the match.

        3. Wearing two hats

先生在向我介绍他的同事Larry时,说他可是个大忙人:“He is wearing two hats.”

        4. With a grain of salt

Allen 说了一句:“I’d like to take it with a grain of salt”。 Allen 愣了一下,然后大笑不已,解释道“ Take something with a grain of salt” 是“对某事有保留、持怀疑态度”的意思。

5.You are in for a treat!

Rhonda便开始滔滔不绝地介绍他们的招牌菜,听得我十指大动,直咽口水,Rhonda便笑着说: “You are in for a treat !” 我愣了一下,以为Rhonda要请我去那里吃饭,心里十分不好意思,试探着问过她之后,Rhonda 笑着解释说: “You are in for a treat means you’ll like it !”

        6. Knife and fork

        7. Skeleton in the closet

他说的“skeleton in the closet”(英国人则习惯说成skeleton in the cupboard)现在的意义并没有那么可怕。 Many old families have a number of skeletons in their closets which they are loath to discuss(许多古老的家族中有很多秘密,他们不愿谈及这些话题。)

        8. Skin off one’s nose

他听完后说: “No skin off my nose.”

注:no skin off sb.’s nose 也可说成 no skin off sb.’s teeth

         9. Small beer

客人就可能回答说:“I’ll have a small beer(给我一点儿啤酒。)” He thinks no small beer of himself. Ours is a small-beer fast-food joint beside McDonald.

        10. Spaghetti

        11. Speaking of the devil

Joe于是说“speaking of the devil”。

        12.Stolen from ... dealer

        13. Sweet tooth

当医生为我检查的时候,他问我:“Do you have a sweet tooth?”我很无辜地回答:“I had a doughnut this morning before coming here. I brushed my teeth. There is no sweet tooth.”

        14.The Hong Kong dog

Walker has a touch of the Hong Kong dog and will be here a little bit late.” The Hong Kong dog

        15. Throw the book at Somebody

先生答曰:结果是“They threw the book at him”。 原来并非如此,“Throw the book at somebody”是指给某人最大极限的惩罚:charge someone to the full range of law。

A Letter to Yang Zhenning form Weng Fan

Cold here, icy cold there. You belong to neither, leaves have withered. Your face is pale and blue, a tearful smile. Something in your eyes, whispers words of last good-bye. My heart sinks down, tears surge out.

Hot summer. Cheerful Cocktail. You took my hand. We fled into another world of band. You sat by my side, long hair tied behind, cool and killing. Smile floating on the lemonade, soft and smooth. How I was amazed. Your face looked like the cover of the magazine. My head spin. You led my hand, danced along the crazy theme.

Light vied with wine, elegance mixed with fragrance, laughing covered by greetings, the crowed was busy at handshaking. You stood there, eyes on me. I trembled at the sparkles, brighter than the light. A masterpiece from God, I felt dizzy. We were not near, yet we were together.

Days ended. You said, you would wait for me at the Alps side. We would ski against snowflakes dancing in the sky. I gave no answer but a good-bye to accompany your flight. Gone was the plane, I suddenly tasted my pain. I knew I had been silly and stupid, you were in my heart, I shouldn't have hidden in the dark. I tried to forget your disappointment. I made believe sometime someday, I would tell you, I feel all the same.

My thought struggled at confessing, somehow hesitation ended in flinching. I continued my role of a fool, clinched to my maiden pride, yet secretly indulged in your promise of the white land -- snow measuring down to us, in your arms I am lifted up. The chiming of Christmas bell!

The bell died in the patter of rain, from hell came the laughing of Satan at my brain. Tearful smile, swallowed by the darkness. How could trace your hair to wipe your tears? My hands reached out, catching nothing but a raindrop, on a leaf that had withered.

Snowflakes have melted into water, we are no more together.

PM is Britain's dullest speaker: poll

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is Britain's most boring speaker, ahead of footballer David Beckham and actress Kate Winslet, according to a poll published Wednesday.

Brown's cerebral style placed him ahead of Beckham, whose London cockney accent played badly in the poll, and Winslet, widely criticised in stiff upper lip Britain for her emotional acceptance speech at this year's Golden Globes.

Brown once used the phrase "post neo-classical endogenous growth theory" in a speech and one of his frequently-told jokes recalls a meeting between the late US president Ronald Reagan and former Swedish premier Olof Palme.

An aide told Reagan: "No Mr. President, he's an anti-communist", to which Reagan responded: "I don't care what kind of communist he is".

The survey, of 1,000 adults by the firm SpinVox, judged British actor Stephen Fry the best speaker.

It came as another survey found that just nine percent of Britons backed Brown's government's multi-billion pound bailout for banks, with around 90 percent saying priority should be given to protecting jobs.

That survey, also of 1,000 adults, was carried out for People's Charter for Change, founded by trade unions and left-wing lawmakers from Brown's ruling Labour Party.

Vocabulary:

cerebral:appealing to or requiring the use of the intellect; intellectual rather than emotional(理智的)

Michelle Obama says White House "feels so good"

Few things are as sweet to a parent as family meals and bedtime with the kids, and those are two reasons Michelle Obama says her new life at the White House is comforting.

In an interview for the March 9 issue of People magazine, the First Lady reveals some details of her family life in the month since President Barack Obama was inaugurated, and they moved their daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7 into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C.

After more than a year living out of suitcases and in hotel rooms on the campaign trail, Michelle Obama says the family now has dinner together every night, where they talk about the highs and lows of their day. Later the president is able to tuck his children into bed before they drift off to sleep.

"We haven't had that kind of time together for (years), so that explains a lot why we all feel so good in this space," the First Lady told People magazine.

Among their daily routine is exercise for her and her husband at 5:30 in the morning and breakfast together before their respective days begin. She said the secrets to their successful marriage include being able to laugh together and his ability to stay calm under stress.

But she stopped well short of saying they are a model of married perfection. "I don't want anybody to think it's easy. It works because we really work at it ... We have a strong marriage, but it's not perfect."

She did say her husband has quit smoking, for now, and that Malia and Sasha must still do their chores -- make their beds, clean their rooms and clear the dishes from the dinner table.

"People (here) want to make your life easy, and when you have small kids -- I've explained this to the staff -- they don't need their lives to be easy. They're kids," she said.

And what about the president's promise to get a dog for the girls? The First Lady said it is on the way, but is waiting until April, after the girls have had their spring break from school. But she has a problem -- the name.

The girls have come up with several ideas, including Frank and Moose, but mom Obama is not going for those. "I'm like, no. Come on. Let's work with the names a little bit," she said.

stop short of:to decide not to do something(决定不做某事)

Sean Penn:

Thank you. Thank you. You commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns. I did not expect this, but I, and I want it to be very clear, that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often. But I am touched by the appreciation and I hoped for it enough that I did want to scribble down, so I had the names in case you were commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns, and so I want to thank my best friend, Sata Matsuzawa. My circle of long-time support, Mara, Brian, Barry and Bob. The great Cleve Jones. Our wonderful writer, Lance Black. Producers Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks.

And particularly, as all, as actors know, our director either has the patience, talent and restraint to grant us a voice or they don't, and it goes from the beginning of the meeting, to through the cutting room. And there is no finer hands to be in than Gus Van Sant. And finally, for those, two last finallies, for those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone. And there are, and there are, these last two things. I'm very, very proud to live in a country that is willing to elect an elegant man president and a country who, for all its toughness, creates courageous artists. And this is in great due respect to all the nominees, but courageous artists, who despite a sensitivity that sometimes has brought enormous challenge, Mickey Rourke rises again and he is my brother. Thank you all very much.
Kate Winslet:

"Ok, that fainting thing Penelope!" (referring to Penelope Cruz Oscar speech earlier) I'd be lying if I have not made a version of this speech before, I think I was probably 8 years old and staring into the bathroom mirror. And this (holding up her statuette) would've been a shampoo bottle. Well, it's not a shampoo bottle now! I feel very fortunate to have made it all the way from there to here. And I'd like to thank some of the people along the way who had faith in me, my friends and my family, especially my mum and dad, who are in this room somewhere. Dad, whistle or something, 'cause then I'll know where you are. (He whistles.) Yeah! (Waving to him.) I love you. And I also want to thank Hylda Queally, Dallas Smith and the late, much loved, much missed Robert Garlock. And from Peter Jackson and Emma Thompson to my very own Sam and Stephen Daldry. I'm very lucky to have been given Hanna Schmitz by Bernhard Schlink and David Hare and Stephen and working with you is an experience I will never forget. There was no division between the cast and the crew on this film, and that's what made it so special. So, to have been surrounded by a remarkable group of people who provided an unbroken chain of support from David Kross to Ralph Fiennes, Bruno Ganz, Lena Olin, from hair and makeup to cinematography, from the art department to the ADs, and from New York to Berlin. And I am so lucky to have a wonderful husband and two beautiful children who let me do what I love and who love me just the way that I am. Anthony and Sidney, this is for you. This is for both of you. And I want to acknowledge my fellow nominees, these goddesses. I think we all can't believe we're in a category with Meryl Streep at all. I'm sorry, Meryl, but you have to just suck that up! And, just to the Academy, thank you so much, my God! Thank you!"
